The Storybook Run was started in 2016 as a fun 5K Run/Walk to support Early Childhood Education through race proceeds, awareness and a children’s book drive held leading up to and during the race. The race is hosted by Open Minds Child Development Center and partners with KC Running Company for race timing and logistics. The Open Minds’ motto is “Minds Opened and Lives Changed,” which encourages and supports education and learning for all children!

The race is held the first Saturday in March of every year to bring awareness to National Read Across America Day. National Read Across America Day is an annual event that is part of Read Across America, an initiative on reading that was created by the National Education Association. Each year, National Read Across America Day is celebrated on March 2nd, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. This day is a motivational and awareness day, calling all children and youth in every community across the United States to celebrate reading.
